Making Positive Changes

Maggie Kelly

How do we go about making positive changes?

The truth is, we can’t make the changes we want to make in our lives if we don’t change our mindset. Creating a new mindset paves the way for a broad range of life changes.

So let’s talk about our mindset  . . .

What is a mindset and how do we create a new one?

Admitting that we are feeling stuck and having difficulty making positive changes is a great place to start. However, it can also be frustrating when we aren’t sure how to get unstuck.

Trying to leave an unhealthy habit behind or create a new lifestyle change is sometimes very difficult. Why? Because . . .

We’re afraid of change

We’re afraid of the unknown

Perhaps we’re even feeling comfortable in the discomfort

We’ve given up on being able to make a change

Sometimes we have great intentions. We begin to make the changes we desire, but we don’t have the will or support needed to keep going.

Or sometimes our unhealthy habits creep back in to stifle potential progress or change

Our old habits are rooted in an old mindset. So to change, we must create a new mindset.

While it may sound incredibly ambitious to change a whole mindset, in reality this is easier than just making one or two personal adjustments. Creating a new mindset paves the way for a broad range of life changes.

What is your mindset right now?

This might be a hard question to answer. A mindset is like a worldview. It's the lens through which we see life. There is a silent filtering process going on where we let in certain experiences and censor out others. When we hear someone express an opinion, we screen it through a filter of yes, no, maybe, or so what before we actually take in the opinion.

Our brains have been programmed and conditioned for years to filter reality. We’ve become stuck in one way of operating. If we remain in this mode forever, we end up merely surviving life as opposed to thriving in life.

The tough part is that it’s incredibly hard to see our own programming and conditioning if we are under stress.

Today’s stress levels have reached epidemic proportions. In my practice as an integrative life coach, I have worked with so many students who’ve come to me with stress-related illnesses, such as fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, adrenal failure, MS, chronic fatigue, and insomnia. In some ways, we have become a society just trying to stay afloat.

Trapped in the doingness of life, we hyperventilate through our daily tasks and demands. Once we finish, we’re too exhausted to experience the things which truly bring us joy.

Were we really meant to run from one thing to the next, our wheels spinning all day long?

Only to find ourselves on our deathbeds looking back at our lives questioning, “Is this all there is?”

I don’t think so.

Were we really meant to just get up, go to work, come home, make dinner, feed the dogs, care for the kids and go to sleep? Only to do the same thing all over again tomorrow?

I don’t think so either.

In order to reconnect to our innermost selves, in order to uncover, discover and discard our limiting beliefs and create the life we envision, we need to settle our physiology rest. We need to return our bodies to their ground state of being, which is a place of peace and tranquility.

We need to take time out to take time in.

By that I mean, we need to minimize the daily stress so that we have a fighting chance of perceiving and shifting our mindset.

When old ways of being have dug in their heels, there can be no creative change without conscious effort.

What if your happiness, joy, peace and fulfillment is just covered over by an old mindset of limiting beliefs and assumptions?
