Beware of Fast-Food Spirituality

I want you to be aware of something. As you might have seen in the yoga craze, our Western society has taken the ancient practice of yoga and, in some cases, turned it into the latest fad with studio after studio sprouting up all over the country. Some studios practice yoga in the traditional way by incorporating asanas or postures into the grounding and centered experience it is intended. Other studios have made yoga almost into a competitive sport creating 75 minute hot yoga classes, prizes for practicing every day for a month, etc. My concern is that if we aren't careful, meditation will become the next American "craze.”

Beware of "fast food spirituality." In our culture which prides itself on getting the quick and easy Google response for a fix for any and all ailments and answers to any question, we may fall prey to believing the common and understandable fantasy that relief from the suffering of our human condition can be quick and easy. Meditation is far more involved than simply sitting down and being still every once in awhile or clicking on a Calm or Headspace App. I'm afraid that if we mix spirituality with a culture that celebrates speed, multitasking and instant gratification, the end result is likely to be "fast food spirituality."

Meditation is not just about stress reduction, a better night's sleep or a quick fix. It's important to remember that to reawaken to your true self, deepen your spirituality and truly enjoy all of the benefits of your journey, your personal dedication and commitment to a routine practice is very helpful. Adopting a daily practice of meditation on a routine and committed basis will provide the greatest chance of returning you to a state of wholeness in body, mind and spirit. Remember, we didn’t get to a stressed out, chaotic state overnight and it’s unlikely that we can settle ourselves down with a few days of meditation. Meditation is a spiritual practice that takes time and investment.

Satsang House was created to be a community in which to surround yourself with like-minded people who gather together to support one another in their mediation practice and spiritual journey. This is the true meaning of the word satsang and exactly why it was chosen as the name for this beautiful and tranquil slice of heaven.
