Light a Match in Your Consciousness

Do you find yourself waking up in the same conversation over and over and over again? Operating within the same routine in the same way every single day? Maybe you drive to work via the same route or say the same things to your kids as you pack them off for school. Do you hear the same thoughts running through your head, i.e. how much work you have to do, how many errands you have to run, how you’re still thinking about that time when your friend/family member/spouse said or did such and such that upset you in some way? If so, it may be time to illuminate consciousness.

Observe

What if you became the observer of all of those automatic thoughts just for today? A silent witness so to speak.

What if you became conscious of all of the repetitive thoughts that run through your head and instead of becoming enrolled in those same stories and emotions, you chose to do it differently just for today? 

It’s only when we can observe ourselves and our thoughts and our behaviors that we can self correct. 

I’m not talking about trying to “think positively” but rather understanding that when we think the same thoughts over and over again, do the same things over and over again, we are literally training our brain to stay in the same loop of the past over and over again. It’s only when we can actually RETRAIN the brain, not think positively, that we can create our own future.  

So how do we do that? 

Interrupt

When we operate on automatic, we are literally bringing our past selves into today. When we do that year after year, there’s literally nothing new for our brains to work with, nothing new for our brain to live into. Instead, we become locked into a way of being that simply replays the same thoughts which produce the same emotions which in turn drive the same actions over and over again, day after day, year after year. 

Have you ever had a friend repeat the same story about how they were wronged by a past lover or family member? You’ve known her for ten years and yet, she tells that same story in the same way, perhaps embellishing it here and there, but nonetheless, it’s the exact same story year after year. 

This is an example of someone living today from a thought about the past. The thought then drives the emotion, the emotion drives the action TODAY but from something that may have transpired ten years ago. (I imagine you might be able to come up with an example of this same thing from your life as well if you stop right now and just think about it for a minute). 

What if instead, you light a match in a dark place? 

What if you bring consciousness to your own thinking? What if you decide today to see if you can notice your thoughts and identify which ones seem to be on repeat. 

Just for today, can you see if you can catch yourself thinking the same thing you’ve always thought about that one incident that happened to you way back when. 

Today, just notice. Just see if you can catch yourself. I’m not asking that you do anything more than that for now. Simply notice. 

How do we get better at becoming conscious of our automatic way of thinking which leads to our automatic way of being? 

Becoming aware. 

Embracing consciousness. 

Meditation is also a fantastic way to begin to retrain your brain to become conscious of your thoughts. Because it’s only when we notice our way of thinking that we have any chance whatsoever to change our thoughts.
